I have recently been watching a lot of Jack Hargreaves' videos on YouTube. He was a television presenter in the '80s (a bit before my time) who narrated several programs about country living in Britain and how things used to be done.
This episode shows him talking about farm labourers keeping pigs in stys at the end of their gardens and then showing a butcher preparing a whole pig into the various cuts. He mentions that the neighbouring households would slaughter their pigs on rotation, sharing out the fresh cuts so that everyone had a bit of fresh meat (in the time before fridges and freezers).
